What is a Mezuzah

A mezuzah is a tiny scroll, written with real ink on real parchment by an authentic scribe. The words of the Mezuzah are the most famous jewish prayer, the Shema, declaring the unity of God, the unity of the universe. Nailed to the doorpost at the entrance of a home, the Mezuzah is said to protect the inhabitants, whether they are on the inside or on the outside. Passing the Mezuzah on our way to going out and our way to coming home, the Mezuzah is a symbol of something other than ourselves - a watchful eye, protecting and inspiring our daily living, reminding us to bring spirituality and goodness into our current lifestyles.

 Let’s Get It Hanging!

  1. The Mezuzah (scroll in its case) should be affixed at least 2/3 up from the bottom of the right door post. (see picture for placement). Many have the custom to place the mezuzah on a slight diagonal with the top pointed slightly inward.

  2. While holding the mezuzah above the area it will be attached to, have in mind to fulfill the Torah command of mezuzah and make the blessing written below. (In whatever language you are comfortable with, hebrew is best, but reading the transliteration or english is fine as well.) After saying the blessing, affix the mezuzah. That’s it!

THE BLESSING

:ברוך אתה ה` אלוקינו מלך העולם אשר קדשנו במצותיו וצונו לקבע מזוזה
